Unsung hero

If only life were a battle field
You would have won it
With no armour or shield
Save by your uncommon wit

Territories would be conquered
With just your skill and brain
Though mocked even by kith and kin
That your intellect is just acquired

You left the battle field as unsung hero
You didn’t fight enough, they chatter!
Talents not showcased or bragged about,
Doubted is the intellect in your worn-out head

You walked head bowed down
For they didn't care to know
that you are a family man
who forgot to chase your precious dream..

  1. It often happens that men burdened with family problems fail to chase their dreams though euquipped to realise them. But the irony is that people close underestimate his potential
    Nicely written verse.

  2. I like how you have written on a uncommon topic. Well written. The last para flashed the images of few men I know- Unsung Heroes- truly.

  7. If one does'nt live for oneself?! makes me ponder.. conflict of thoughts.. noble ideal slogans versus sheer reality!
a very different line of thought, well reflected with depth and insight.

  11. A warrior does leave a lot more than dreams when he goes after something more.. Maybe that loss is more than what words can express.. or what people care to understand! Well writ!

  12. Nice ..very nice indeed.
Was this grammatical aberration intentional..'as unsung hero' or did u mean 'as an unsung hero'

  13. Lovely ! Dear KP, you have done real well out here...

    You walked head bowed down
For they didn't care to know
that you are a family man
who forgot to chase your precious dream..

Only one point...it need not be a family man or woman, you know...and also, it need not be case of forgetting either...some (single or with family) just drop out from the general scheme of things...

Have you read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged? Some could even be like John Galt...(do you remember the story "Diary of a Stalker"...:)))

And another case I keep thinking about is the life of Hemingway...also shown in the movie "Snows of Kilimanjaro"...a dying author wondering why he did not live life to the fullest...and of course, I kep thinking about Hemingway's suicide...why?

Ah! I have written lots...that is the sign that I liked your writing a lot...well done!

  15. The poem is highly sympathetic and melancholic and at the same time a reminder of a person's sacrifice of his talents for his family...dreams remain dreams for some people who selflessly care for other's happiness...the thought is compassionate and the words poignant...touched by it:-)

  24. Hey Arjun Mashe - Thank u!!! Oh ya John Galt.. "Who is John Galt?" I am getting ur point now.. the dreams might not have been chased for various reasons.. but un/fortunately I was thinking of a family man and his dreams shattered at very young age when i wrote this.. You have given me here an wonderful thought to ponder too..

P.S: I like John Galt.. the ghostly hero until half way.. but when I hear Ayn Rand there is only one name that comes to my head.. "Andrei" from "We the living.. " do you like him? or you a fan of Kira.. just asking..:)

  27. Well touching topic!

Sometimes we cant follow our dreams and passion. It becomes a distant reality burdened by other responsibilities :(

  28. Hi Sujatha - Yes dear.. and it impacts a lot too.. I have seen many people like that too!

@ Anjaani - No not at all.. how can I take ur comments as rude? :) I agree that they can..! but then they dont become the "Unsung Heros" they become heros.. but mine here are the ones who couldn't chase because of some boulders in life.. and so they are Unsung..! got it?

hi Megha - Thank you dear.."distant reality" you said it right! :)
